Importance of Sustainability in the Event Industry

While sustainability may seem like a passing trend, those in the event world need to get on board and adopt more eco-friendly practices. Why? Although hosting events is highly beneficial for your company, they can take a toll on the environment.

From travel to materials, large gatherings of people can consume significant resources, and the impact on the environment is clear. As event organizers, we have a crucial role in lessening this impact because it’s not just about following the rules but about doing what’s right.

Luckily, you can make more eco-friendly choices as you plan and staff your events. Here are a few ways you can make your next event more sustainable.

  • Encourage eco-friendly transportation. Start thinking about your carbon footprint before your event even begins. Since travel greatly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, you can encourage vendors, attendees, and staff to carpool or ride share to and from your events. If possible, you can also arrange shuttle transportation for event-goers and employees. Taking these steps can help minimize the environmental impact of attendees’ travel.
  • Limit waste at events. While you can’t completely eliminate waste from events, you can limit waste generation. Consider using reusable or compostable materials for everything from event signage and registration tags to utensils and food containers. If the items aren’t made from recyclable materials, at least ensure they can be recycled since every person in attendance is getting a name tag and eating so this waste especially adds up. Additionally, if you’re working with a street team, have them hand out eco-friendly promotional materials made from recycled or biodegradable materials (and let attendees and passersby know about them!). Make sure recycling and/or compost bins are accessible throughout the event to encourage attendees to do their part and dispose of their waste more responsibly.
  • Think about energy efficiency when planning events and festivals. Events can quickly become an energy-consuming nightmare when you consider all of the lighting, equipment, and tech needed to pull them off. However, if you can use renewable energy sources like solar or wind power, you can significantly lower your event’s carbon footprint. And remember your mobile events! Solar-powered generators or battery-operated equipment can make mobile marketing tours more energy-efficient.
  • Work with sustainable vendors. Your events would not be successful without professional, reliable vendors. So, as you select the companies you work with, think beyond a good reputation and consider those who prioritize sustainable and ethical business practices. For example, if your event will feature catering, opt for a team that uses locally sourced organic and seasonal ingredients.
  • Educate event attendees. In addition to implementing these eco-friendly practices, one of the best things you can do during a marketing event is to educate vendors and attendees about these efforts. From interactive displays to simple conversations, create space to educate attendees about sustainability practices and promote eco-friendly products and services. You can also issue statements about how your event is working to be more eco-friendly on your social media and website, which eliminates waste and is accessible after the event.

By making small but impactful changes, the event industry can embrace sustainable practices and perhaps inspire vendors and attendees to do the same.
